BUCKINGHAMSHIRE HAUNTED PUBS & INNS

AMERSHAM
THE CHEQUERS INN,
This particular Inn is reputed to be so haunted that a former landlord moved out, rather than spend any more time there.  He, and his family,  were plagued by ‘weird, shrieking screams’ night after night. One of his family saw ‘a white, hooded figure’ in her bedroom. A male figure, also in a cloak, was seen by a member of staff in the 1970s, and locals report this to be the spirit of a Mr.Osman, a warder who accompanied a group of religious martys to where they were burned at the stake. Another local theory is that the ‘shreiking screams’ so often heard may be the daughter of William Tylsworth, one of the martys who was burned for their beliefs,as it was her who was forced to light the fire that took the lives of the martyrs, including her father.

CHALFONT ST.GILES

The sound of a Phantom violin is heard here, along with Phantom footsteps. The violin in question is believed to be that of  a former Landlord and musician, Donald Ross, who died there many years ago.

COLNBROOK
THE OSTRICH INN
A gruesome legend attaches itself to the Ostrich, that of a former landlord named Jarman. Jarman it is believed was responsible for the murders of  no less than 60 guests staying at the Inn over time. Before his execution he is alleged to have confessed to all these heinous crimes, and his methods of disposal were explained in detail. A selected bed  in the Inn was placed on a trap door, locked by a bolt underneath, when the bolt was removed, the bed would fall downwards, sending the innocent, sleeping victim hurtling into a tub of boiling water below, where, according to a 17 C account they would be ‘suddenly scalded and drowned’. Despite it’s gruesome history, the pub seems to be relatively devoid of ghosts, with only one of Jarmans victicms accounted for as a resident ghost.

EDLESBOROUGH
THE BELL
The apparition of a young girl has been seen here, although some believe it to be a 'timeslip' apparition rahter than a recurring haunting.

THE TWO BREWERS

WEST WYCOMBE
THE GEORGE & DRAGON HOTEL
A ‘Woman in White’ has been clearly seen in the George & Dragon. Believed to be ‘Sukie’ (aka ‘Susie’ in some accounts) a 18 C ‘Serving Wench’ who was killed in the nearby Hell Fire Caves. She had gone to the caves to meet her lover, on the strength of a note, asking her to meet him there for a midnight tryst, wearing her best white dress. Unknown to ‘Sukie’ the note had been forged by her local admires, who had grown annoyed of her rejection for them in favour of this other, gentrified gentleman. Sukie did indeed turn up for her ‘tryst’ only to find she had been tricked, and in a following scuffle she fell, banging her head on the wall of the cave, where she died.  One can’t help feeling that this event, which is read to be nothing more than drunken tomfoolery, and practical joking, has a far more sinister edge to it, which, for now is unrecorded. The ‘white lady’ who haunts the George & Dragon would seem to impart a     very sad, depressed atmosphere as recorded by one guest who witnessed her apparition while staying there, this feeling would hardly be surprising given the ending to her short life. Another guest reported seeing the ghostly form of a young girl in a white dress, who disappeared in front of a bedroom door, and dogs have been found to back away for no apparent reason in front of the same door.As well as Sukie’ sounds of Phantom footsteps have been heard coming down the stairs, and another ghostly apparition has been seen sitting by the fire in what was the old servants quarters. This was witnessed by a former landlady who recalls it seeming so lifelike shemistook it for a member of her staff, that is until it vanished in front of her eyes.
