HAUNTED HOUSES

Ask most people you know, and at least one person - if not more, will mention the fact that they have lived in a 'haunted' house.  Quite often these 'hauntings' ammount to little more than unexplained noises, feelings or similar... a few people may say they've seen or experienced things that they could not explain. Whilst, for most people, these occurences may be little more than uncomfortable at the time, and something they can live with, for others, living in a 'haunted' house can literally, be a nightmare, and lead to long-term Psychological damage.

HERTFORDSHIRE 2009

From the day we moved into our terraced Council house, the feeling was 'uncomfortable'. The house ALWAYS felt cold, and I remember that I hated the Dining Room especially. I felt so bad about this room, that I refused to go in there after dark, I couldn't even bear to look into it after dark, and one corner of the room especially made me feel uneasy, I always felt 'something' was watching me from there.

These feelings of unease were not just limited to the Dining room though, I hated being downstairs after dark on my own - something that had never bothered me before. I was convinced that oneday I would come face to face with someone when I turned off the lights to go to bed, so I tried to avoid being the last one downstairs at night. Once upstairs, I would avoid having to go back downstairs again unless absolutely unavoidable...that's how bad I felt!

I remember it took months before I could sleep comfortably in the house - again something I'd never experienced living anywhere else. I constantly felt that 'someone' was in the house with us, and they were watching me from the landing upstairs...these feelings grew so bad I moved my bed so I was facing a wall and couldn't see the bedroom door.  To give you an idea, I used to sleep with my 3 small children in bed with me so I knew they'd be 'safe' there - it seems irrational, but that's how uneasy I felt!

One day, about 6 months after moving in, my eldest daughter, who was about 5 at the time went upstairs during the day to her bedroom, she came running downstairs almost immediately in a frightened state. She said the man in her room had told her to "SHHHHHHH" (as in shush- be quiet).  She was so scared she refused to go back up, but I said I would go up there and talk to him......I asked whoever it was not to do it again, that they had frightened a small child, and that we were a good family and we would like to live there with him peacefully, not be scared.

For whatever reason, this seemed to work, and things settled down, my daughter never having another experience like that during the time we were there.

Although things did get better, the house still seemed cold and 'spooky' at times, so much so, that my husband (a total sceptic when it came to the Paranormal) had his views changed considerably during the time we lived there - it was hard for him not to when so many things happened that he could not rationally explain, such as:

  • Hearing the sound of running footsteps upstairs, only to find all the children fast asleep at the time.
  • Seeing 'flashing' lights in dark rooms with the curtains closed.
  • Small objects going missing, only to turn up at a different place and time.
  • Seeing floating 'lights' travelling across the carpet or falling through the ceiling, these ranged from 'fairylight' size to 'tennisball' size - these 'lights' were also witnessed by visitors to the house.
  • Smells of stale beer and smoke which would seem to 'travel' around the house, being smelt at 10 minute intervals - also witnesssed by visitors.
  • A thick 'mist' being seen in an upstairs bedroom
  • Changes in atmosphere in the house - like an 'electrical storm' was about to happen.
  • An 'orb' was filmed coming through a wall during an investigation by GPS.
  • Voices 'heard' in empty rooms, that could not be rationally explained.
  • Cold spots and temperature variations that could not be explained.

Other things happened, and once a family member staying overnight heard the sound of someone walking up and down the hallway in what sounded like 'wellington boots' - despite the fact that they had seen many ghosts before, they refused to get out of bed because they were too frightened of what they might see! I asked them why they didn't wake me - it could have been someone breaking in!!, to which they replied (in all seriousness) They KNEW it was a ghost - and it sounded angry!

It wasn't until we moved house that we realised how bad our previous house had been at times, our new home felt warm and inviting from day one, and people who visited said how much they liked it compared to the other one! - It's amazing how many people told us they found the other house 'uncomfortable and cold' AFTER we'd moved - they didn't tell us at the time in case they had scared us!

Living in a 'Haunted' house can be extremely frightening, I had always thought myself a rational, level-headed person, and although I believed in ghosts, and similar phenomena, I had never had any 'personal' experience of such, until we lived here. - Luckily for me, I never 'saw' the ghost in question, and, looking back... I really wouldn't have wanted to!

GPS NOTES:
We did a brief investigation of this house, at the request of the householders. We could not run a full range of tests due to the fact their were children in the house (we NEVER investigate with children present in the area) but we were able to go there during the day for a few hours. A clairvoyant attended, and they picked up on the spirit of an elderly man named 'George' who had once lived there, and several other spirits that seemed to 'pass through' the house at various times. We cannot give examples of the investigating we did (at the request of the householder) but we can add that the team we had there (3 members) did experience a change in atmosphere to that of 'an electrical storm' which centred around the main bedroom. Temperature fluctuations were recorded, as well as EMF variations. Orbs were photographed, and one was filmed travelling through a wall using night vision. It was, undoubtedly, one of the most 'active' houses we have Investigated.

After we had investigated, we were told the house 'quietened' down considerably, and the householder lived there 'comfortably' until they moved - we hasten to add that they moved through necessity, not because of anything 'supernatural'.
