THE NICKEY LINE
HEMEL HEMPSTEAD, HERTFORDSHIRE

(this is an abbreviated form of our full report, we have included the parts we feel of most interest)We have not included full background history, but have included a link at the end of the report to 'FRIENDS OF THE NICKEY LINE WEBSITE'

DATE: 08th MARCH 2010
PRESENT: 3GPS MEMBERS

REPORTED HAUNTINGS:
  • The ghost of a man who hung himself from a tree along the line
  • The sound of a baby crying, supposedly those of a child thrown onto the tracks from the bridge.
  • The spirits of people killed when a train ran into a 'shanty town' located near the tracks.
  • 3 small children who were killed on the tracks while playing.

OUR FINDINGS:
We chose what was one of the coldest nights of the year to venture onto the Nickey Line.
We had heard from those locally, that the Nickey Line sometimes attracted 'undesirable people!' on it, and we hadn't been there for a number of years, so we decided to go early hours of the morning, when it would be (we hoped) empty.
We did not want to take too much equipment, as we knew it would be virtually pitch black, (and in case we ran into any of those 'undesirables!) - So we took a small flashlight, a digital camera, and our own senses! We decided, that should we pick up anything on this visit worth investigating further we would return at a later date fully equipped.

When we reached the main bridge (which spans The Queensway Road underneath it) several things happened, affecting all 3 of the people present.

The night was very cold, but 2 of the group reported that they felt 'unaturally' cold - a cold which seemed to pass through them and 'chill them to the bone'. They could also say when the cold had passed them, and when it had returned. One of the group took photos during this time,  and several photos (taken when the others said they 'felt' the atmosphere change around them) showed orbs on them. On some photos the member would hold up their hand to indicate where they 'felt' something, and the subsequent photos would show 'orbs' in the areas they had indicated.

ALL PHOTOS ARE AS TAKEN -  FOR CLARITY, AND TO SHOW GREATER DETAIL WE HAVE CROPPED AND ENLARGED SOME AREAS. WE HAVE SHOWN THE ORIGINALS OF EACH PICTURE, AND THE CROPPED AND AUTO CORRECT VERSIONS TO GIVE COMPARISSONS.

One of the group, alone, walked further up the line, to see if they could 'feel' anything more. They calleded  the others over to a group of trees and told them to photograph there, as they had felt that this area had a 'spirit' attached to it. The photos taken around the tree showed a mist, that seemed to be of some 'form' and the photos taken in succession showed this 'form' changing shape.  One image shows the mist with what looks like a hanging head.

Of course, during the night we had taken a few photos with 'breath' in it, which can be mistaken for something Supernatural, but on this occassion we made sure that we had not allowed this to happen, and the mist in the picture of the trees was nothing like the 'breath' we had accidentally caught on other photos, it seemed to be further away, not directly in front of the lens, and seemed to have distinct 'masses' in it - as though a moving form.

Because it was so dark, we decided not to go on and  to walk back the way we had came.  As we walked towards the bridge, 2 of the group again felt 'something or someone' was there with them, but a different presence to any encountered before.  Using the third member of the group as a 'control' they both told them exactly what they had felt there - neither being aware of what the other had said until after. This is what they both said:

PERSON 1 (female):
  • There was the 'ghost' around them of a small girl between 5-7 years old
  • She has light blonde hair, which is tied back.
  • Her name is Georgina
  • She died in an accident - she fell down the side of the track.
  • She was with a brother, who couldn't save her
  • She haunts the track looking (or waiting) for her brother

PERSON 2 (male):
This person originally said that they felt someone with them, who (in their words) "wouldn't leave me alone"
  • The spirit is female - a little girl about 5/6 years old
  • She has blonde hair, which is tied back.
  • Her name was Georgette
  • She died in an accident - she slipped.
  • On the day she died she was on her way home

The similarities were uncanny, and unknown to both persons other people walking along the line had reported similar things, especially males who felt 'something' round them. Could this have been the little blonde haired girl looking for her brother?

Several photos were taken in the area, and several showed something which looked like the form of a small girl - hand outstretched. Another photo was taken of a house at the bottom of the line (which was the old station house)  - 2 members of the group believed that this house held some significance in the death of 'Georgina/Georgette' with one person suggesting that her body was taken there after she died, and memorials held there for her. The house itself is almost directly below where we had 'sensed' this spirit, so a member of the group decided to photograph it, which meant going down the embankment slightly. It may have been sheer coincidence, but as soon as they stood on the embankment, they slipped over completely- just as the other members believed the little girl had. The embankment wasn't steep at that point, nor was it wet - and they had walked the rest of the way, through more difficult areas without mishap. Luckily a tree branch steadied them enough to prevent falling further. A photograph was taken (quickly!) and this photo showed a very large, bright 'orb' not far from them in the direction of the house.

The 'spirits' we believe we may have encountered on the Nickey Line seemed to be centred strongly around the main bridge area, and as we passed over it they seemed to remain behind. As we walked along we certainly felt as though there were many things on the old Railway track, but the cold weather and pitch black meant that a long stay on the Nickey Line would not be possible. However, we do feel that the hour we spent there gave us a wealth of information, and experiences. It would be nice if we could find out more about Little Georgie, and the others who reside there.
